Play It Safe with Microwave Cookware

The microwave is a very useful appliance. Invented in 1946 by Dr. Percy Spencer, the microwave revolutionalized the cooking industry, allowing foods to be cooked at much higher power in shorter amounts of time. Modern grocery stores would not be the same without the microwaveable dinners located in the frozen food section, the advent of which can only be attributed to the invention of the microwave. There are dangers to the microwave, however. Only certain materials are safe to place in the microwave, so it is important to purchase special microwave cookware.

Anything But Metal!

There are a wide array of materials that special microwave cookware can be made from. However, it is important not to place any container or bowl made from any type of metal in the microwave. Be sure to watch out for bowls with metal trimmings or decorations. If you place metal microwave cookware in the microwave, you will see sparks that create a serious hazard. It should also be noted that one should not put aluminum foil in the microwave either, as this will produce the same results.

There are many safe microwave cookware alternatives to metal. The best microwave cookware does not absorb too much heat. Your best option is ceramic or earthenware cookware; however, the ceramic cookware should be unglazed. (Glazed cookware produces too much heat.) The use of plastic and wooden cookware in the microwave should be limited, and you should never put any sort of Tupperware in the microwave. Tupperware will melt and create a serious hazard. Both clay and heat-resistant glass can be used in the microwave, but avoid using lead or crystal materials.

Is It Safe?

You can test for yourself whether or not the microwave cookware you wish to place in the microwave is actually safe. To do this, fill a cup with water and place it in the microwave next to the microwave cookware you wish to test. On high power, run the microwave for one minute. If the container feels hot after one minute, then it is not safe microwave cookware.

Cooking In Style

What is the best size and style of microwave cookware to use? There are so many different types of container that it is hard to know exactly what your best option is. Microwave cookware should ideally be round or oval in shape; food placed in a square container tends to cook unevenly. Make sure that the container is large enough so that no food spills over as you are cooking. Finally, good microwave cookware should have shallow sides.
